The Right Tools Make a Difference

By: Hilary Rodela, Lead Digital Content Writer for Taction USA

No matter what your occupation may be, having the right tools makes a huge difference in the outcome of your job performance. When it comes to investigation, one of the most valuable tools is knowledge. Knowledge in this field maybe obtained from a book, but the best way to learn is through experience.

Thus far in my career, I have investigated (give or take) around 30 deaths, most of them being homicides. This may not sound like a ton for those who have been in the career field for decades, but I have only been in this line of work about nine. With each case, I have learned something new especially in the aspect of crime scene and perpetrator behavior. In my experience, my foundation came from a combination of an internship and trainings. Looking back, I believe this was an advantageous due to the fact that I was able to get hands-on experience, and obtain academic knowledge.

Every scene you attend will be different, no two are ever exactly the same. Even serial murderers have left different pieces of evidence behind at each scene. However, it is important to remember each similarity and each aspect of a scene that differs from the last. This will help you recognize particular characteristics of the perpetrator in other cases. You will find you will be able to pickup on important leads that you may have overlooked in the past.

Not only do you need a solid foundation of knowledge but you also need the right physical tools in order to investigate properly. It is crucial to have quality equipment as an investigator. It is equally important to have the right materials for evidence collection and storage. After all, if you are investigating homicides, you must preserve that evidence indefinitely.

Remember, having the right tools in all connotations of the word, is the key to a successful investigation!
